You can take all kinds of interesting photos using small items.
We would like to introduce a popular item used in stock photos.

That item is a “message board”.
We are sure everyone has seen these on websites and in advertisements on the train.
They usually feature a model holding a white piece of paper.
But it isn’t enough for the model to just hold the paper. Here are some tips for taking a photo with a message board.

1. Hold it straight

The message board will be used as a space to enter text. If the board is crooked, the text may not fit onto it well.
Have the model adjust the board so its right and left sides are both at the same height.
Also have him or her adjust the board so it is parallel to the camera lens.
Avoid flimsy material such as printing paper and use a sturdy board.

2. Watch the background

White paper or board is normally used for message boards, and sometimes the background may be white as well.
It is best for there to be a difference in lightness, but if the foreground and background are equally bright, the horizon line may become indistinguishable. So pay attention to the background when shooting.

3. Get it look big

It depends on the size of the message board, but if you take a full body shot of the model, the message board will look smaller.
In such cases, when text is added to the message board, it may be too small to read.
It is best to shoot from just enough distance to capture the model from the waist up.
If you must take a full body shot, prepare a larger message board.

4. Eyes on the camera

An important message will be written on the message board.
Have the model look straight at the camera to help get the message across.
If you can get the model to smile, that’s even better.
